Some Citrus County kids continue to benefit from the power of music.

One a week, the young musicians of the Citrus Youth Orchestra come together to play, filling the Inverness church where they practice with classical music.

The orchestra has been going strong for almost five years, and Harold Seckinger loves every minute of it.

"I have music at home, but that's not like having this group of musicians," he said.

With some financial help from Duke Energy, Seckinger came up with the idea of creating the orchestra because he wanted kids to have a crack at playing classical music. He says a lot of kids never get the chance.

"It's a wonderful experience," Seckinger said. "I'm giving them something that they wouldn't get otherwise."

When Seckinger has a minute, he likes to sit back and enjoy. He's about to turn 90 years old and his dedication to the kids isn't fading a bit. He says this is also about teaching self-esteem, respect, tolerance and more.

"That's the whole process," he said. "This is because they are learning to work together to achieve something that they would not get separately."

Ceth Johnson is new to the group. He says it is fun, but he is also learning a big lesson.

"You have to kind of be a little more patient here so you don't get frustrated," Johnson said.

"We are not trying to develop finished musicians," Seckinger said. "Our idea is to add this to their entire character building."
