The Hillsborough County School Board approved a plan Tuesday to buy 200 new buses by the start of next school year.

Officials plan to phase out buses that are more than 20 years old. The new buses will cost about $21 million, and the district plans to spend an extra $2 million on bus and truck parts.

The approval comes about two weeks after a bus went into a lake, drawing added attention to the district's aging fleet.

School Board members also voted to hire an outside auditor to help the Board manage its money better.
