Paisley Greer, a Citrus County senior, is the first to admit her life hasn't been easy. But she has remained focused on her mission to be successful.

And now, she's been given the opportunity of a lifetime: Greer was recently awarded a Leaders 4 Life Fellowship, which is a full-ride scholarship to college. She is one of just six seniors in the state to get it and only the second from Citrus County.

"There have always been experiences that happened in my life, but I have kind of tried to turn the negative things into something positive," she said.

Greer's family doesn't have a lot of money, and she doesn't like to talk about it. She is all about action.

In addition to her everyday responsibilities as a senior at Citrus High School, Greer also takes college classes at night and during the weekend.

"I kind of wanted to make things better for myself," she said.

And now, the senior's hard work and dedication are paying off.

"It makes me feel really privileged and kind of like all my dreams are coming true," Greer said.

The rare scholarship comes in part from Take Stock in Children, a nonprofit organization that helps students from low-income families escape the cycle of poverty through education.

"Once she sees a goal she would like to get to, she doesn't just wish it — she puts things in action to reach that goal, said Henny Feldberg, who is Greer's mentor.

Greer said the whole situation is "just crazy to think about," adding: "It's almost unreal."

The scholarship covers tuition, housing, books, food and supplies. It's an amazing opportunity for a student who worked so hard.

There are only 34 other students, including Greer, to ever receive this scholarship in Florida. Selection is based on strong leadership skills, moral character and academic success.
