Eleven-year-old Sean Scott can call himself a published author.

A poem he wrote in school is featured in Highlights magazine.

It was a school assignment; to answer the question, what would it be like if it snowed in Florida?

“(The teacher) just told us to write about what it would be like if it snowed in Florida and I just went back to my seat and started writing,” Scott said.

Scott was inspired by his memories of growing up in Washington, D.C. He said he loved playing in the snow.

“If it snowed in Florida it would be awesome. The first thing I would do is go outside to play,” Scott read from his poem.

He wrote about catching snowflakes on his tongue, having snowball fights and building a snowman.

He ended the poem with a way to still have some winter fun in Florida.

“Since it doesn’t snow in Florida we can make sand angels at the beach,” Scott read.

When Scott’s mom came across the poem, she decided to send it to Highlights Magazine.

“I always see the stories from other writers and I think Sean’s stories could be in here,” Simone Scott said.

The magazine has been publishing work from 7 to 12 year olds for the past 70 years.

Highlights is a magazine that you remember as a kid, that’s one of your earliest childhood memories,” Simone Scott said.

Now Sean Scott has a Highlights memory of his own. After submitting the poem too late for a winter edition, the Scott’s got word it would appear in November 2015 edition.

“I was a little excited,” Sean Scott said.
