Police say a malnourished dog was abandoned in front of a Pinellas Park business earlier this week, and now an employee of that business is asking members of the community to help him save the dog.

The dog, a male bulldog mix between 5 and 10 years old, was found Monday in front of a business in the 3900 block of 118th Avenue N.

Police said the dog was in poor shape, with irritated skin all over his body, an eye that was encrusted with discharge, overgrown toenails and chain or collar marks around his neck. The dog was malnourished with visible bones and was filthy and shivering from the cold. Police noticed the dog also had hard nodules along his hindquarters, elbow and belly.

Police say they think the dog may have been abandoned sometime between Sunday and Monday morning.

Animal Services responded to the business to take custody of the dog, saying they did not think the dog had a good prognosis.

Adam Clark, who is an employee at the business, asked if he could try to help the dog before the dog was turned over to Animal Services. Clark wanted to take the dog to his veterinarian to see if anything could be done to help the dog before he was euthanized.

“They pretty much said that they were going to, there was no hope for him and they were just going to put him down," Clark said. "So, I asked him if I could take him to my vet first and see if that’s true. Because if there was nothing terminal, I wanted to do whatever we could to save him."

The dog was taken to Midway Animal Hospital, where the veterinarian said it appeared as though the dog had been living on concrete for a long time, causing the hardened nodules and skin issues. They also said the dog had spent long periods of time on a chain or collar, and was in a state of starvation.

Police say the animal hospital has agreed to work with Clark to treat the dog, which has since been named Andray. Clark has already paid several hundred dollars out of his own pocket to cover the cost of the treatments, and he has started a GoFundMe page to ask for help in paying for the dog's treatment.

The investigation continues, but police say they have no leads. They are also asking for the public's help in providing information about this case.
