The ongoing Ulmerton Road problems that have delayed a major road construction project may soon be over.

Four years into the widening project on Ulmerton Road in Largo, the contractor on the project has gone out of business. The project, which was started in 2012, was initially set to be done by the start of the year. Now, it is set to be finished this summer.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the delays are due to the contracting company going out of business.

“Unfortunately the contractor has voluntarily defaulted," said Florida DOT Spokeswoman Kris Carson. "Which means he has voluntarily walked away from the job."

Conalvias U.S.A., LLC defaulted on the Ulmerton Road project, as well as two others in Florida. Conalvias, which is operated by a parent company based in South America, went out of business in January.

Meanwhile, Prince Contracting in Tampa will finish the widening work on the 2.28-mile portion of road on Ulmerton near Belcher Road. The work will take place on a slower timetable. Officials are only saying the job should be done by summertime.

Drivers are unhappy with the project, as are business owners on Ulmerton, who have been dealing with fewer customers and a maze of orange barrels and signs in front of their businesses.

According to the DOT, Conalvias has been paid about $19 million for this job since 2011.
