Road construction geared toward improving traffic flow along a section of Starkey Road in Seminole got underway Wednesday.

According to Pinellas County officials, the Starkey Road widening project will expand the section of Starkey Road/Park Street North from 84th Lane North to 82nd Avenue North from four lanes to a six-lane divided roadway.

In addition to widening the road, officials say the work will include improvements to turn lanes, sidewalks, accessibility ramps, pavement markings, drainage and traffic signals.

The project is expected to be complete by 2017.

While construction is in progress, various sections of the road will be reduced to one lane. Drivers through the area can expect and should plan for significant travel delays.

Another segment of Starkey Road/Park Street North, between 54th Avenue North and Tyrone Boulevard, is also planned for improvements. No dates for that work have yet been scheduled.
