First, there's the parade and all the revelry that comes with it.

The party comes after long into the night. And by the next day, the massive cleanup is underway.

But crews missed a spot cleaning up after this year's Gasparilla Parade and celebration.

"What is this, Wednesday?" said Keith Franzese of South Tampa this week, standing at the corner of west Azeele Street and south Howard Avenue. "Gasparilla was Saturday, and there's still trash all over the place."

This week, that corner - where a new Taco Bus is slated to be built - have been awash in Gasparilla trash. Cups, cans, paper, food wrappers and all remain strewn across the lot.

David Dixon, who operates World of Beer directly across the street from the trashy lot, said he knew something was wrong on Monday.

"All of us were like cleaning up in the area and stuff like that," Dixon said. "And that one was still had their fence up, you know. We figured they were gonna get it done Tuesday when they took the fence down, for sure!

"They're done, they're gonna clean it up. No problem. (And) nothing!"

Dixon said he contacted City Hall but got an automated reply. Dixon and a few other workers and residents say they've had enough.

"I think it's ridiculous," he said. "It's a beautiful section of town and it should be cleaned up on a regular basis."

Dixon said it is as much about trash as it is reputation.

"All the people that come down here to visit," he said. "Like, ah, it's South Tampa, let's go check it out and see what it's all about.

"And that's the first thing you see when you turn the corner. I mean, I didn't realize that this is trashy like that. 'Cause we're not trashy people down here."
