The push is on in the next few months to finish the George Washington Carver Community Center in Crystal River.

It's a unique project because most of the work is being done by volunteers and it's being paid for with donations.

In addition, some employees from Duke Energy's Crystal River Energy Complex are pitching in, taking time off from their work to help.

Construction of the community center is moving right along and the only reason the project is happening is because of volunteers like Robert Holmes.

"I have lived here practically all my life and I like to see something that's really going to be tangible and helpful to the community," Holmes said.

About two dozen Duke Energy volunteers put in a full day on Monday, doing everything from putting up ceiling tiles to window work and more.

Volunteer Harold Walker is overseeing the work. He says a lot of help and donations have come from many different places to make the community center a reality.

"This is a community center being built by the community it will serve," he said.

Walker says it looks like the community center should be open in a few months. Once it opens, it will offer a lot of options to the community, including after-school programs.
