A new club for boys is getting a lot of attention at one Hernando County elementary school.

  • 100-150 students participate in the Urban Gentlemen's Club
  • Every Tuesday the boys dress up
  • School officials are looking to start similar club for girls

On Tuesdays at Pine Grove Elementary School in Brooksville, some of the boys are dressing up and they’re looking good. They are members of the school’s new Urban Gentlemen’s Club. All you have to do to join is dress up on Tuesdays.

"It can help you set a good example," said fourth-grader Vinnie Lee.

"We do this because we want to be leaders and not followers," said fourth-grader Noah Wilkerson.

Between 100 to 150 kids a week get involved, and they range from pre-K through fifth grade. It's a way for the young men to build their confidence, stand out and influence their school in a positive way.

Teachers are noticing better behavior. Vinnie says the club helps him with his grades.

"The week after I started I almost got all As, but I had one B in science," he said.

Assistant Principal Nick Pagano started the club. Not all the kids that want to join have the right clothes, so he's asking for donations.

"They walk a little taller, their heads a little higher," Pagano said.

"I feel more confident wearing the suit and tie," Noah said.

Pagano says the girls want to get in on the stylish fun too, so the plan is to come up with a similar club for them.
