Pinellas schools to action to improve results are some of its failing elementary schools on Tuesday, replacing principals at three of the five schools.

The low performing schools are Campbell Park, Melrose, Fairmount Park, Maximo and Lakewood - all in St. Petersburg.

Melrose, Campbell Park and Fairmount Park will get new principals in the fall.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, only one of those schools will get a new prinicpal from outside the district. Nikita Reed from Memphis will take over at Melrose.

"Our work is not done," Pinellas Superintendent Mike Grego said at Tuesday night's school board meeting.

Part of the plan to help turnaround the under-performing schools is hiring new teachers and paying them up to $25,000 more per year to work in failing schools and, possibly, extending the school day.

District officials say they are continuing nationwide searches for new principals and other staff members. During the past three weeks, the district has received about 100 applications for leadership and teacher positions, school officials said.

The plan to turn around the five failing elementary schools is expected to be implemented with the start of the 2016-17 school year.
