If you have expired or unwanted prescription medications, you can safely get rid of them on Saturday.

Operation Medicine Cabinet will take place at four locations in Hillsborough County on Saturday. This time, officials will be launching a new tool to help them fight against prescription drug abuse.

  • Four locations to drop off prescription medication
  • Disposal bags that deactivate medication will be available

The Hillsborough County Anti Drug Alliance will provide free Deterra System drug disposal bags, which aim to help people with safe, effective home disposal of their prescription medications. The disposal bags deactivate prescription drugs, which renders them ineffective for misuse and safe for the environment.

Officials say Florida has made progress in the fight against prescription drug abuse, but drug overdose deaths are starting to climb back up, which is why they are making an effort to collect unused prescription medication from residents.

Officers will be on hand to take unwanted, unused medication for proper disposal, which is the safest way to get rid of such medication rather than throwing it in the trash or flushing it down the toilet.

You can drop off unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and pick up a medication disposal bag to take home. Free medication lock boxes, substance abuse prevention brochures and educational materials will also be available.

Citizens may drop off unwanted prescription drugs at four sites throughout Hillsborough County, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 30 and pick up a medication disposal bag to take home. Free medication lock boxes, substance abuse prevention brochures and educational materials will also be available.

The collection sites are listed below:

  • CVS Pharmacy, 105 S Pebble Beach Blvd, Sun City Center
Sponsored by Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office

In addition, Clearwater police will be at Westfield Countryside Mall on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect unused prescription medication. The event will be near the L.A. Fitness at the mall, which is located at 27001 U.S. 19 N.
