A home in Oldsmar was heavily damaged in a fire early Sunday morning, according to Palm Harbor Fire Rescue.

  • Fire broke out at a home in Oldsmar Sunday morning
  • 2 adults, 1 child inside home at the time of the fire
  • Family was able to get out safely; home declared a total loss

The fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. at a home on Lafayette Boulevard. According to firefighters, two adults and one child were asleep inside the home.

A smoke alarm alerted the family to the fire and they were already safely out of the home by the time firefighters arrived.

According to officials, the fire started in the back of the house and the high ceilings made it difficult for crews to put out the flames.

“The fire, just where it happened was unfortunate for the homeowner because it was in an area that provided quick access into the roof,” said District Chief Dan Zinge.  “It burned into the back portion of the wall of the house and quickly went up into the roof on the second floor.”

The house has been declared a total loss.

Fire officials say an initial investigation shows that candles may have been the cause of the fire.
