St. Petersburg police are looking for the driver in a hit-and-run that left a pedestrian dead.

The crash happened Saturday at 1:52 a.m. on the east sidewalk of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street S near James Avenue S.

  • Steven Stepo was crossing Dr. MLK Jr. Street when he was hit by a vehicle
  • Police believe it may have been a black mid-sized truck

According to St. Petersburg Police, Steven Stepo, 55, was walking north with another man when they started crossing the road.

Investigators say it appears as though Stepo was hit by a southbound vehicle in the median lane of Dr. MLK Jr. Street S.

Stepo was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in critical condition. He was pronounced dead shortly before 6 a.m.

Investigators say the man Stepo was with couldn't provide much information, but he believes the vehicle may have been a black mid-sized truck. Police say that vehicle should have damage on its front end, hood and/or windshield.
