A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday night for a Lakeland teen killed as he was trying to get to his school bus stop.

More than 100 people turned out to support the family of Kalen Kirk, 17.

"Kalen is a rock star today, ladies and gentlemen, he's a rock star," said his father, Tony Kirk.

Mixed in with the flowers and cards and tokens of love at a makeshift memorial near the accident scene, there was a sense of anger.

Kirk was hit as he tried to cross a busy road in the dark with no crosswalk.

"I'm begging everyone, help his father and his stepmother and any other parent with children that have to cross not just at this intersection but at any intersection up and down this street. Fight please. Do not let my son, our son, die in vain," said his mother, Tiffany Criss.

Members of a county Sidewalk Advisory Committee didn't discuss the accident at a meeting Tuesday night but school officials that were in attendance said they are investigating.

"We look at this bus stop which I have evaluated and it is a safe bus stop and we'll also look at whether we should be crossing children there or not," said school safety specialist Larry Hermes.

At the vigil, Kalen's family, friends and even strangers lit candles and said prayers. They said they plan to fight for changes.

"We want to celebrate him but we don't want his legacy to be forgotten. We've got to do something," said Tony Kirk.

A public memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 5 at 7 p.m. at Free Life Chapel, 6780 N. Socrum Loop Road, Lakeland.
