A 78-year-old woman was killed early Monday morning in a house fire after reportedly suffering smoke inhalation, officials said.

  • Woman, 78, was found unresponsive inside the home
  • She was taken to the hospital, where she later died

The Plant City Police Department was called to a house fire about 12:25 a.m. at 1814 Bond St. When officers arrived, they got into the home and found a woman unresponsive inside.

The woman was taken out of the home and transported to South Florida Baptist Hospital, where she later died, officials said.

The woman has been identified as Virginia M. Carpenter, of Plant City.

Plant City Police said it appears the woman died from smoke inhalation.

The State Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to investigate the fire.
