Jacob P. Sayers, 16, died after deputies say he drowned at Rogers Park, 7244 Shoal Line Blvd., a public beach on the Weeki Wachee River.

Sayers had reportedly been spending the day with his family, playing with ball in and near the water. According to reports, Sayers went into the water after the ball and began to struggle.

Deputies began searching for the teen in the water at 3:26 p.m. A short time later the teen was pulled ashore by bystanders, about 100 yards down river.

An off-duty ER nurse, who happened to be in the area, immediately began to administer CPR until a fire rescue crew arrived.

He was transported to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries.

UPDATED at 2:56 p.m.: Deputies originally believed Sayers had jumped from a bridge, but later learned and reported otherwise.
