Police are investigating a shooting that happened Tuesday night at a Winter Haven apartment complex.

The shooting happened shortly before 9 p.m. at the Sailwind Apartments, located at 360 24th St. NW in Winter Haven.

  • Witnesses reported hearing gunshots, seeing an altercation
  • Man appeared to fall to the ground, then got up and ran from scene
  • Police found blood drops but have not found the victim

Police say residents reported hearing gunshots and seeing someone who possibly fell to the ground. Other witnesses, who were inside their apartments at the time, said they saw a group of men standing in the parking lot in front of one of the buildings, where a disturbance appeared to be taking place.

Witnesses say that as they looked at the commotion, they heard the gunshots, then saw a man fall to the ground. The man immediately got up and ran toward the area of Lake Cannon Terrace and Avenue G. They say they also saw a white four-door vehicle leave the parking lot right after the incident occurred.

When investigators arrived, they say they found some blood drops in front of the building, where witnesses say the altercation took place. They found more small drops on the ground toward Avenue G, but then the trail of blood stopped along Lake Cannon Terrace.

Investigators say they do not have any information about the victim or anyone else who was involved in the altercation.

Anyone with information on either the victim or anything having to do with the case is asked to call Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward.
