They spend their lives caring for and assisting those in need but every now and then, service dogs need a little help themselves.

On Wednesday, service, search and rescue, police, guide and therapy dogs received free eye exams at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Clearwater.

Bryce Snively brought his service dog Aladdin to get a free exam. Snively was paralyzed in a car crash nine years ago and said Aladdin has served as a big help and even better friend.

"He's a good friend we have a lot of fun together, I take him swimming," Snively said.

"He just helps me open doors at home and if I drop something he can pick it up," Snively said.

Dr. Jessica Stine, Opthalmologist at BluePearl Veterinary partners, said sight is one of the most important senses for these service dogs.

"A lot of the dogs especially for their owners who might even be visually impaired, it’s very important we rule out any possible condition that could potentially make them make a mistake which could end up not only harming themselves but potentially their owner as well," Doctor Stine said.

Dr. Stine said the eye screenings will detect diseases or any other issues that could impair the dog’s vision and cause them harm. The free exams are part of a national effort organized by the American College of Veterinary Opthalmologists.
