A Pasco County high school is considering modifying its dress code.

Ridgewood High School in New Port Richey is surveying parents to see how they would feel about the change. The school sent out a draft of the modified dress code on June 23.

According to Ridgewood High School’s research, modifying student dress code can lead to an increase in student engagement and it encourages better behavior. It's proposing changes such as having students wear only polo shirts with the exception of school t-shirts and solid t-shirts.

Only certain colored shorts and pants would be allowed, not skirts or dresses at all.

Incoming sophomore Elias Fontinot says he’s against it and so are his parents. “They don't want it either because they're going to have to buy all new clothes and stuff,” said Fontinot. “I already have a lot of clothes and I’d have to buy a whole new wardrobe so they don't like it."

Ridgewood High School is currently the only high school considering a change in dress code, according to the district.

Once the survey is complete the school, along with the district, will review it and decide at a later time how to proceed.

The survey ends Wednesday at 3 p.m.
