Here's a statistic that might surprise you: Around 113 smartphones are lost or stolen every minute in the U.S.

That's according to a new report from gadget insurance company Protect Your Bubble, which also compiled a list of the worst U.S. cities for smartphone theft:

  1. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  2. Seattle, Washington
  3. Oakland, California
  4. Long Beach, California
  5. Newark, New Jersey
  6. Detroit, Michigan
  7. Cleveland, Ohio
  8. Baltimore, Maryland
  9. New York, New York
  10. Boston, Massachusetts

There aren't any Florida cities on the list, but that statistic of 113 lost or stolen phones per minute grabbed our attention.

The most common places to lose a cell phone were fast food restaurants, drug stores, grocery stores, coffee shops, and the office. So make sure you have your phone on you before you leave work.

What to do if you lose your smartphone

If someone gets a hold of your cell phone, it could be as bad as losing your wallet -- or even worse.

Apps on your phone may hold information about your email, social media accounts, and even bank accounts.

Social media news website Mashable named Find My iPhone and Android Lost as two popular apps that help you locate your phone, and let you erase all data remotely if you decide searching for your phone was a lost cause.

Mashable recommends a few other tracking apps for your cell phone or laptop here.

A number of smartphone theft victims around the country have said they were able to get help from local law enforcement just by having tracking software on their phone and keeping it on.
