It's a story about a struggling school and a little girl who wanted to help. And it all begins with a birthday wish.

Turning 10 years old is a big deal. But Cassidy Schenk had a different celebration in mind.

"For my birthday, instead of having presents, I had my friends give me donations, and the donations helped pay for the Palmetto Elementary field trip," Schenk said.

Schenk doesn't even attend Palmetto. She's a fifth-grade student at Windermere Elementary School, but she overheard at church about the F-rated school and how — as an incentive — Palmetto students might go on a LEGOLAND trip "if they put in extra hours of tutoring."

Schenk decided she wanted to help out.

Schenk collected her birthday money. She also put together a video about the project.

"Palmetto Elementary is a school about 20 minutes away from my school here in Orlando, Florida," Schenk said in the video.

Schenk even interviewed Dr. Angela Murphy-Osborne, the principal of Palmetto Elementary School.

"The students here are economically challenged, but wonderful students who come and want to learn every day," Murphy-Osborne told Schenk in the interview.

Schenk's family and friends at Windermere Elementary raised more than $1,500 that went a long way toward paying for the field trip.

Schenk's efforts prompted additional contributions from Cigna Health and LEGOLAND. The field trip happened the same day Palmetto Elementary School received the godo news: the school went from an F-rated school to an A-rated school.

And Schenk was there to celebrate.

"One of the little girls asked me if I wanted to go on the field trip," Schenk said. "And I said, 'Yes!'"

The experience prompted a family discussion, and with mom in the technology business, Schenk and her three sisters started a birthday wish club. Now, other kids can donate birthday present money to help a cause.

"Most of the time, it's just parents giving to other grownups, but this is a special organization where kids can connect to other kids," Schenk said.

And her words leave us all with a gift: "It's a lot better to give than receive. And you may not realize it now, but once you do it, it's something special and you'll never forget it."
