The man wanted in connection to the deadly hit-and-run crash that killed two deaf people about a year ago along Florida's Turnpike surrendered to authorities.

Robert Bates, of Sanford, surrendered to Florida Highway Patrol investigators after a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection to the Oct. 7, 2013, crash that killed Mariah King, 19, of Davenport, and Vincent Mathews, 24, of Lakeland.

Troopers said the victims, who were both deaf, pulled over to change a tire when a tractor-trailer hit and killed both King and Mathews. Bates then fled the scene, troopers said.

Bates has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
