Animals shelters in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties want to empty their kennels by the end of the year. They are offering $12 adoptions to do it.

Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, Orange County Animal Services, Osceola County Animal Services and Seminole County Animal Services are all offering $12 adoptions for dogs and cats through the end of the year.

Sean Hawkins, a spokesman for Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando said 1,531 dogs and cats have been adopted so far in their Orlando and Sanford shelters alone. They hope to adopt out another 469 more pets.

"This is the first time that all of the agencies have come together for a single adoption campaign," Hawkins said.

Adoption fees often include initial vaccinations, spaying and neutering as needed and microchipping.

You don't have to be a resident in those counties to adopt, however if you rent the shelters will check to make sure you are allowed to adopt.

Many people give cats and dogs as presents during the holidays, but there are some things to consider when adopting a pet. Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando offers some resources on choosing the right pet, and what to expect when you get that new pet home.
