A new bill in the Florida Legislature would allow people with licenses to carry guns on college or university campuses.

State Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, is sponsoring a bill filed Monday under HB 4005. The bill would delete a provision in current law that prohibits students and employees from openly carrying handguns, or carrying a concealed weapon or firearm.

If approved the bill would go into effect in July 2015.

Lawmakers originally tried to pass a bill allowing guns on college campuses back in 2011. That bill failed through the efforts of former Sen. John Thrasher, the St. Augustine Republican who now runs Florida State University.

A shooting at the FSU library last month left three people injured and the gunman dead.
