Two new studies are revealing information that may have patients reconsidering their medication options.

One new study shows the commonly used iburprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, may be linked to a serious stomache disease.

The disease linkedin to ibuprofen is celiac disease, which causes a breakdown of intenstinal linings allowing toxic substances to leak into the bloodstream.

Ibuprofen is also believed to cause intestinal inflammation, making it harder to digest foods.

A second study, this from the Journal of Pediatrics, shows that many doctors are still prescribing codeine to children, despite safety concerns. 

Researchers found doctors working in emergency rooms in the U.S. prescribed coddeine to children more than 500,000 times per year.

While the drug is prescribed for pain and to stop a cough, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended against prescribing codeine to children.

According to the study, the risks and side effects of the drug range from excessive sleepiness, to difficult breathing and even death.
