A key building at the Kennedy Space Center now bears the name of the first man to ever walk on the moon.

Hundreds gathered Monday to mark the renaming of the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building. Among them were Armstrong’s colleagues on Apollo 11, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins and other NASA dignitaries.

The facility was used during the Apollo program to prepare the command, service and lunar modules for launch.

"I very much like the fact that this building will bear his name in his honor," Collins said. "He would very much not have sought it. It was not his style. But, I think he would like to have his name so closely associated with this, the heart and the soul of the space business."

Armstrong's family was also at the ceremony. They spoke of a man who shied away from limelight, knowing it took a team of people to make his historic mission possible.

Work at the newly named facility continues for NASA's Orion program. A test flight is set for later this year.

Armstrong died in 2012.
