NASA is making sure precious spacecraft launched from the Space Coast aren’t damaged when a comet flies close to Mars later this year.

The space agency is taking precautionary measures to make sure debris from a comet doesn’t hit three spacecraft.

The comet will miss Mars by about 82,000 miles.

However, the material shedding off the comet’s tail could cause significant damage to NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars Odyssey orbiter, and MAVEN, which just launched last year from the Space Coast.

MAVEN is expected to arrive at Mars one month before the comet flies by.

The Mars orbiters are being positioned so they’ll be on the other side of the red planet when the comet comes by on Oct. 19.
