Sweeping reforms are coming to Florida's prisons, despite the legislature's failure to pass a bill.

Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order Friday to begin work on those reforms.

They include strict enforcement of a policy regarding physical force. Any employee that uses or decides to use physical force must sign a report under oath within one day of the incident.

The reforms also include enhanced security reviews to ensure safety.

And all Department of Corrections employees who report any wrongdoing will be protected from retaliation.

The department will work on implementing these reforms over the next several months.

Lawmakers put a reform bill together, but it was abandoned when the Florida House adjourned early before the session ended. No word on whether the bill will reappear during the 20-day special session, scheduled to begin June 1.
