This past weekend kicked off the start of the 2015 scallop season.

People are coming from near and far to hit the waters off Citrus and Hernando counties in search of scallops.

Tiffany Gant was among the first to hit the water Saturday to scoop them up.

“Because it’s fun and they are good to eat,” Gant said.

Scallop season is a big moneymaker for local businesses, so state officials opened the season a little early to help out.

The season doesn’t end until the end of September, so there is plenty of time to get out and have some fun. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials want to remind everybody to stay safe and follow the rules.
