Pupperoni is safe now.

On Monday we told you about the injured puppy found by a pizza delivery driver who found the dog on North Ohio Avenue near the Citrus Bowl and called Orange County Animal Services.

The puppy's previous owner said she received the injury from another dog in the neighborhood. Veterinarians diagnosed Pupperoni with an infection to her leg due to the injury being untreated.

The owner, who was not identified, surrendered the puppy to Animal Services, who said an investigation was pending.

"Despite her injuries, Pupperoni is still a friendly, outgoing pup seeking companionship and attention," said Dil Luther, with Orange County Animal Services. "We cannot stress enough the importance of reporting animal abuse and neglect, as these victims cannot speak for themselves."

But Pupperoni is now in the hands of a pitbull rescue in St. Pete. She'll be taken to a vet to get her injuries checked. The owner of Passion for Pits rescue says it takes a good community to help save dogs.

"People who are actually out looking and being aware of their environment is a lot of it. Not just letting a dog run the streets and not wondering why it's happening." said Mike Fleury.

Fleury is hoping she will be adopted as soon as she's able to go home.

If you witness animal abuse and neglect, you can report it anonymously by calling Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS (8477).
