If you’re looking for a job in Central Florida, now is a good time.

Forbes magazine ranked Orlando fourth in the nation for job growth in 2015. On Thursday, over 100 people looking for jobs packed the University of Central Florida Alumni Center for Startup Quest. It is an entrepreneurial training program that helps put people back to work.

“We take technologies out of the universities, out of NASA, we pair them with a very experienced mentor, people that are established in the community,” said Michael Judith, program coordinator for Startup Quest.

After the pairing, teams present the technology and pitch their ideas to investors. The program helps unemployed and underemployed graduates like Ryan Griffin.

“Just currently feeling underemployed, it’s been tough times lately,” said Griffin.

Griffin has a business management degree and hopes to create a local business flying drones.

“Startup Quest sounded great like a potential opportunity to get grants or investors that will invest in my idea and help me grow with it and help build my business,” said Griffin.

The training program also allows local businesses to grow. One business owner said he was there to see how he can move his film business, based out of Orlando, to the next level.

“As we keep going around and meeting new people, we see that entrepreneurs are out there and they are trying to get their companies moving. Central Florida is very healthy for that right now,” said Karluca Prieto, owner of Fusion Studios.

The program coordinator said Central Florida has the university systems, theme parks and medical facilities that help facilitate growth.

“In addition, downtown where entrepreneurs are helping entrepreneurs, we have a Starter Studio where a young man who just sold his business for $36 million founded this. It is an accelerator-type program where people can come in with a business and they help them,” said Judith.

Startup Quest is a 10-week program. Since its start three years ago, the project coordinator said more than 185 people have become self-employed.

There are six Florida cities included in Forbes magazine’s top 10 best cities for job growth. Naples was listed as number one. Ocala came in behind Orlando at number five.
