Orbital ATK is now planning two cargo space station missions from the Space Coast.

A segment of Orbital ATK's Cygnus unmanned spacecraft arrived at the Kennedy Space Center earlier this week. The ship will launch on an Atlas V rocket in December from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

It will be the first time Cygnus launches from Florida, as well as the first time it launches on board an Atlas V rocket.

The spacecraft will deliver 4 tons of supplies to astronauts on the International Space Station. The company announced this week that it is planning a second cargo mission from Florida in 2016.

NASA has a large demand to deliver cargo to the International Space Station following two mishaps in the past year.

The Cygnus spacecraft and cargo on board were destroyed after Orbital's Antares rocket exploded shortly after liftoff from Virginia in October 2014.

The company is making modifications to Antares to make it ready for flight from Virginia next year, as well.

Commercial space took another blow in June when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded after liftoff from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. A Dragon capsule was destroyed.

SpaceX still hasn't announced when it will return to flight.

In the meantime, Russia and Japan are continuing unmanned cargo missions to the space station to ensure astronauts have enough food and supplies.

A Japanese cargo spacecraft is set to launch Sunday.
