It's a tighter race now for the Democratic presidential nomination in early primary states.

Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is gaining ground on Hillary Clinton in the polls in Iowa.

A new poll from the Des Moines Register and Bloomberg Politics has Sanders at 30 percent support.

Clinton leads at 37 percent, but she has lost a third of her supporters in Iowa in the last three months.

The new numbers show a surge in support for Sanders.

The outspoken progressive senator from Vermont polled at just 5 percent support back in January.

It's not the only poll that shows what's called the "Sanders Surge." In New Hampshire earlier this month, the Franklin Pierce University/Boston Herald Poll showed Sanders pulling ahead of Clinton for the first time among NH voters.

Iowa and New Hampshire at the earliest primary/caucus states.

Clinton continues to enjoy heavy support in national polls but analysts do see some vulnerabilities.
