A hang glider was killed Tuesday afternoon during a training session at the Marion County Airport, the Sheriff's Office said.

Tomas Banevicius, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to preliminary information, Banevicius was flying a hang glider that was being assisted by a power tow line system to build altitude. During the takeoff, Banevicius' hang glider rotated right and downward, witnesses said.

It was his third flight of the day, and he was about 35 feet in the air when the craft hit the ground nose-first, the Associated Press reported.

Banevicius was with U.S. Hang-Gliding Inc., a New York-based company training in Central Florida, deputies said.

Marion detectives and the medical examiner's office is investigating.

Because of incorrect information from the Sheriff's Office, a previous version of this story misidentified the airport at which the incident occurred. The story has been updated.
