Friday night Lakewood Ranch played spoiler to the Riverview Rams and their senior night.
Mustangs quarterback Chad Rex used some dazzling runs down the stretch to help seal the 35-28 win.
"He played well for us tonight, Rex turned some negative plays into positive ones for us," Lakewood Ranch head coach Mick Koczersut said.
After a scoreless third quarter, the two teams combined for 32 points in the fourth.
On third down and three with just under six minutes left Rex took a quarterback keeper 59-yards down to the 1-yard line setting up a first and goal.
"The guys blocked well on that play, really opening up the gaps for him," Koczersut said.
On the following play Darren Lowery punched in the 1-yard touchdown run.
The Mustangs used some trickery on the 2-pt conversion, giving them a 28-21 lead with 5:49 left in the game.
However, Riverview running back Karan Higdon wasn't going to go down without a fight.
The University of South Florida commit, scored on a 26-yard run with 4:42 left in the fourth quarter.
The touchdown was Higdon's third of the night, the other for runs of 13 and 32-yards.
"He is a work horse for us, such an unselfish player," Rams head coach Todd Johnson said.
With the game tied at 28, Rex was nearly intercepted by Oshea Grant on a screen pass that would have likely resulted in a pick six for Riverview (4-4)
The Mustangs (4-3) reverted back to the running game, grinding down the Riverview defense with Justin Fischer.
The junior tailback had 25 yards on his final four carries with his last resulting in the game winning touchdown run from two yards out.
"He carried us down the stretch, helping us continue to get first downs," Rex said.
The Rams would get one more chance, but Daymon Murray intercepted a last second Hail Mary ending the game.
