Pink was the quite chic this month.

And pink led to a lot of green.

High schools throughout the Bay area supported breast cancer awareness with various fundraisers.

“It really is astounding,” said Susan Minton, medical oncologist at Moffitt Cancer Center. “I mean to have such young folks so knowledgeable about what a common cancer breast cancer is and to be out here and caring about doing something about it and then actually participating in it and getting excited about it and raising funds for breast cancer.

“I’m astounded at the maturity of the young people.”

While some schools helped by raising money, like Academy of the Holy Names annual Spike and Splash event that raised $11,000, others helped by simply wearing the color pink, which can mean the world to someone battling breast cancer.

“It really is helpful. It’s so uplifting for them,” Minton said. “Even when I talk to patients sometimes, I remind them they’re not alone. Breast cancer is just so common and there’s a lot of folks out there just like you, fighting like you are.”
