Tampa Bay Rays starter Matt Moore will have Tommy John surgery on his injured left elbow next week, sidelining him for the rest of the 2014 season.

Moore told the Tampa Bay Times he will have surgery to repair a partially torn UCL suffered in a game last week against the Kansas City Royals. The surgery will require him to miss the rest of the season.

"What was coming out, it's a shame to have to be shut down right now, but it just wasn't comfortable," Moore told Marc Topkin of the Times. "Being stuck in the position I am right now, where it's not exactly comfortable but it's not exactly completely broke, it's kind of one of those things that you know it's going to get worse. If we had to have our best guess, that was what we would say — it's going to get worse."

The Rays' 24-year old lefty threw a few bullpen sessions on Monday, but still felt some discomfort.

Moore will undergo surgery on April 22, according to the Times, performed by specialist Dr. James Andrews.

Andrew Friedman, the Rays Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations, said during a conference call on Tuesday he believes his team can still win without Moore.

"I do feel like we have the depth to withstand this," Friedman said, "and we have guys that can put us in a position every fifth day to win a game."
