Ethan Haslam grew up in a gymnasium.

He had too. Between games his dad Tom coached and ones his older brother Jake played in, Haslam spent a good part of his growing years surrounded by hoops.

“When he was a little kid, we used to take his coloring books and his matchbox cars to go watch Jake play in AAU tournaments on weekends,” Academy at the Lakes coach Tom Haslam said. “So he got to watch a lot.”

And apparently, Haslam absorbed a lot. The Academy at the Lakes senior guard developed into one of the Bay Area’s top shooters. Last week, he entered an exclusive club – the 2,000-career points club. Needing 16 points against Bayshore Christian to reach the milestone, Haslam finished the game with 43. He had 17 points by the end of the first quarter.

That effort earned him BHSN Athlete of the Week honors.

“Coming into the game, I was super pumped,” Haslam said. “It was just a great feeling as soon as I stepped onto the court.”

Immediately after he reached the milestone, Haslam ran up into the stands and handed the game ball to his big brother Jake, who starred at Tampa Prep (2005-08).

“It was a big moment for me because I’ve always looked up to him my whole life and he’s always been a role model,” Haslam said. “It was really special for me to give that to him.”
