In the time you could spend sitting at any major intersection in Tampa, Plant's Jack Guyton can run the 1600M.

"He ran 4:13.16 at USF and that was really good for him," said Plant's assistant track coach Bryan Garcia.

Just really good? That finish at the USF-Steinbrenner Invitational on March 21st was tops in the nation at the time.

"It felt really good to get my name out there in the national standings," said Guyton. "There's probably the top distance runners in the nation looking at my name and that just felt really cool."

The future Gator is used to big moments. He won the Class 4A state gold last year in the 1600M and the 3200M. What makes those finishes even more impressive is his transformation.

"We were sitting here saying 'Can you believe where we've come in a year?,'" said Garcia. "He was last in the state meet his sophomore year. He went from last to first. So I think that was one of the more impressive things about him that he had the gumption to come back after that and finish first."

"Starting junior year, that's when I really took off," said Guyton. "I think that's 'cause I started weightlifting and getting in the gym and doing a bunch of lifting and core exercises. I think that really helps with my strength."

"Times are great, but he just wants to go back (to states) and compete," said Garcia. "He is a competitor."

"I would love to win a state title in the 1600 that's for sure," said Guyton.

The senior said selecting the University of Florida, for athletics and academics, was a no-brainer.

"They've been competing for the national championship every single year and I want to be one of those distance runners who really brings up the track program on the distance side."
