The Steinbrenner warriors captured their second district championship in their short history, defeating the Wiregrass Ranch Bulls 2-1 on Friday Night.

Both teams advanced past the top seeded teams in the district to reach the finals. Setting up an unlikely championship game that featured two very hungry teams.

Wiregrass Ranch, who is having the best season in the school’s history, beat No. 1 seed Freedom in a marathon 15-inning contest on Wednesday night to earn their spot in the finals. They came into the night on a six-game winning streak that included a come-from-behind win over Sickles, where they erased a five run deficit, in round one of the district tournament.

Steinbrenner knows they have a strong team for the future, featuring eleven underclassmen (six freshmen, 5 sophomores) on the active roster. But they are ready to win now and they've showed it throughout the 2015 season. Ten times this year the Warriors have scored ten or more runs, showing they can flash the bats at any time.

On Friday night it was Steinbrenner's sophomore pitcher Emalee Jansen who willed her team to victory behind a strong Warrior defense. A first inning RBI double by senior Erica Serafini, followed by an RBI single for Senior Lindsay Boynton, kicked off the night for Steinbrenner.

Neither team would score another run until the top of the seventh inning. Wiregrass Ranch coach Eddie Melendez with the rally cap on, looked on as his team opened the seventh with base runners on first and second with no one out. Sophomore Alexis Ridolph knocked in senior Megan Miller on a fielder’s choice, and the Bulls were within one, with a runner in scoring position. With the game on the line Emalee Jansen induced a fly out to end the game and grant her two senior teammates a district championship in their final opportunity.

The Steinbrenner Warriors are the class 7A district 8 champions for 2015. Both teams will advance to the regional quarterfinals on Wednesday April 22nd.
