Alfreda Steele's neck is going to start hurting with all the medals she's wearing around it.

The Pasco High School junior won two gold medals and two silvers this past weekend at the Class 2A State Championships at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Steele has now won eight medals overall at states in her first three years of high school, including seven in the past two years.

Her great day led Pasco to a 4th place finish in the state in Class 2A.

Steele scored 36 of the team's 39 points on the day.

Steele, who won her first state championship gold medal last year in the 200 meters, won gold in the 100 meters and long jump this year.

She's currently ranked fifth in the nation in the 100 meters, and winning gold in that event meant more to her than any of her other accomplishments.

"I wanted to win it my sophomore year, but I ended up winning the 200," Steele said.  "So real neat to come back and redeem myself in the 100.  I had that unfinished business to do."

Her first gold medal of the day came in the long jump, which was Steele's first of four events in the day.

After posting a 19 foot jump in the prelims, Steele didn't have to jump again, skipping her last four attempts because no one was able to beat her.

"It was really good to pop that 19 and just go ahead of all the competition and just rest my legs for the rest of the day."

Steele nearly won a third individual gold medal, but was narrowly edged by Paxon's Cedrina Singletary in the 200 meters, which Steele had won in 2014.

Steele also won silver with her teammates in the 4x100 relay.

Her individual achievements have been impressive, but Steele is most proud of what she's done for the reputation of Pasco High School and its athletic programs.

"I always like to put us on the map," Steele said.  It's really good to be from a place so small and bring it out there and make it big."

Steele is being recruited by a number of outstanding Division I schools including Miami, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

She's already looking forward her senior year, when Pasco will move up to Class 3A and the competition at the state championships will be even more fierce.

"I just want to say watch out for next year, 'cause you'll see me again,'" Steele said.
