The UCF women’s basketball team will meet Florida this season in the American-SEC Women’s Basketball Challenge. The one-year event, which will be held Dec. 30 at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., was announced Wednesday afternoon by both leagues.

“The American Athletic Conference is pleased to announce this two-game challenge with the SEC,” Associate Commissioner Barbara Jacobs said. “Our teams are looking forward to bringing the talent and intensity of The American to their fans in Jacksonville for what are sure to be outstanding matchups.”

In addition to the Knights-Gators matchup, USF will square off against Mississippi State. Times, ticket and television information for the American-SEC Challenge will be released as it becomes available.

Although the Knights have a long-standing history with the Gators, the two programs will be meeting for the first time since 2010. UCF came within 10 points of knocking off its in-state foe in Gainesville in their last meeting.

The matchup holds a slew of storylines for UCF head coach Joi Williams, who is a Jacksonville native and spent 12 years at Florida as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator (1990-91 to 2001-02). During her tenure, the Gators participated in nine NCAA Tournaments and tallied a 247-121 overall record (.671 winning percentage).

Williams is set to begin her ninth season with the Knights, who return all-conference selection and hot-handed Zykira Lewis. In addition to sophomores Fifi Ndour and Aliyah Gregory, who obtained significant experience in their rookie seasons, UCF also gains back Makenzi Reasor and Nyala Shuler, who suffered season-ending injuries early on in 2014. UCF brings in five talented newcomers -- three of whom won state titles in 2015.

UCF’s full schedule is expected to be released later this summer.
