The Gaither High School Baseball team hasn't been to a state championship game since 2005.  However, the Cowboys took advantage of the rare opportunity to create history in the 2016 7A State Championship game.  And, they did so on the strength of an inspiring performance by Gaither junior outfielder, Jose Cadenas.

Cadenas has been working to achieve this goal since moving to the United States from Cuba at age eight.  Cowboys' head baseball coach Nelson North said Cadenas broke his hand last season and took every team loss personally.

North believes that is what fueled Cardenas for moments like his game-saving catch in the bottom of the sixth inning in the title game. Cadenas said he knew he had to catch that ball to save the season.
