Montverde Academy had to wait awhile to play their Class 4A State Softball semifinal.
It was worth the wait.
The Lady Eagles defeated Westminster Christian, a finalist in 3A last year, 3-1 to advance to the program's first championship game. Montverde lost in the state semis in 2013.
Montverde built a 2-0 lead early on in their semifinal game. Westminster cut the lead to one in the third inning.
The Lady Eagles responded in the fifth inning. After Westminster left a runner on stranded on second, Montverde extended their lead.
Victoria Atkinson got things started with a triple to right field. She scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1. And that was enough.
Montverde will play Bishop Verot, a winner of the other semifinal, for the 4A title LIVE on BHSN at 5:30 p.m. (Channel 47/HD 1147).
