The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired left-handed hitting outfielder Oswaldo Arcia from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. A corresponding move will be announced later to make room on the active roster. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Andrew Bellatti was designated for assignment.
Arcia (ARR-see-ya), who turned 25 last month, was batting .214 (22-for-103) this season with four home runs and 12 RBI in 32 games, 27 starts (14-LF, 12-RF, 1-DH). Earlier this year, he delivered the first two walk-off hits of his career: a 12th-inning RBI single on April 17 vs. the Los Angeles Angels, and a ninth-inning homer on April 25 vs. the Cleveland Indians.
Over parts of four major league seasons (2013-16) spent entirely with Minnesota, Arcia is a .240/.303/.429 hitter (212-for-884) with 37 doubles, five triples, 40 home runs and 120 RBI in 251 games. He has hit .243/.316/.469 (145-for-597) with 34 homers against right-handed pitching. He was an Opening Day starter for the Twins in 2015 and 2014, and in 2014 hit a career-high 20 home runs which ranked second on the team to Brian Dozier (23).
Arcia signed with Minnesota as an international free agent in 2007 out of Anaco, Venezuela, at the age of 16. His brother, Orlando Arcia, is a middle infielder in the Milwaukee Brewers system, playing in Triple-A.
