Friday nights at Kathleen High School are rocking. And Ruby Troche is usually right in the middle of the action.

“It’s awesome, like literally, it’s one of the best experiences I’ve experienced in my whole life," Troche said. "Even the smallest things like the band gets you hyped up and makes you want to be more alive.

As a member of Kathleen’s Sports Medicine Academy, Ruby gets in on the action helping the players get game ready. The Red Devils can’t kickoff until she’s done her job.

“She perfects her craft," Kathleen defensive lineman Jaaron Jackson said. "I mean she’s really good. I always go to her, everybody on the football team, they’re always trying to go to her to get taped.”

Ruby’s accustomed to helping out the team. Now, she needs the help.

Diagnosed with a rare disorder called Gastroparesis, Ruby’s stomach doesn’t digest food like it normally should. She’s endured countless doctor’s visits to four different hospitals, had a permanent feeding tube implanted in her stomach and is being referred to a specialist in Ohio.

The side effects are debilitating. Weakness, burning pain, migraines, Ruby hasn't eaten solid food since the symptoms began in March.

“No mother wants their child to go through what she is going through," Ruby's mother Crysyal Lopez said. "It’s not easy to hold it in or to be strong, but I have to, for her.”

The Kathleen community has stepped up to help. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with expenses and the football team is spreading the word.

“I would say if you can’t support her financially, I mean we have a GoFundMe page going," Kathleen center Nick Shinn said. "But if you just go see her, maybe send a text or get a card. Even if you don’t know her, I mean, everything you possibly can to give a little moral support for her. She definitely needs it.”

“I feel like God put this on me because he knows I can get out of it," Troche said. "And I can influence other kids that go through situations to keep fighting.”
