Police said Nicole and David Johnson collected money from victims for a deposit to rent their home. The couple then reportedly ran off with an estimated $25,000 to $30,000 dollars and counting.

One of the victims in the case, Bryan Walker, said when he heard about the stories of other victims he had to step up and do something. So he started a GoFundMe page with the help of another victim.

“I’m more concerned about the other families out there because there are a lot of people still living in hotel rooms with their children -- single mothers. I met a lot of them, and it’s just disgusting,” Walker said.

Walker plans to work with Largo Police Department to contact each victim and give them their portion of the money. He said after being scammed, this is something he’s hoping will help.

“I know it’s a little too late right now, but at least if I can get them back, it might help them get back on their feet,” he said.

Walker said he doesn’t plan to keep any of the money because most of the victims are in more dire situations than he is in.

His act of kindness comes as somewhat of a relief for Katina Walker. She was also a victim and a few hours earlier, she didn’t know where her family was going to sleep.

“I know what it feels like to be homeless because we’re homeless, and we didn’t ask for this,” she said. “I break down, and I cry because it hurts.”

Investigators said they’re working on arrest warrants for the couple, who they say fled to New York.
