CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Hundreds of people turned out for a town hall meeting in Clearwater concerning Florida's stand your ground law and the shooting death of Markeis McGlockton.
- Town hall held concerning Florida's stand your ground law
- Controversy continues over stand your ground shooting in Clearwater
- Fl Gov. candidate Andrew Gillum calls for law to be repealed
McGlockton was gunned down during a dispute over a handicap parking space a week and a half ago. The shooter, Michael Drejka, claims he felt his life was in danger after McGlockton pushed him away from his girlfriend.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said Drejka's actions are protected under Florida's stand your ground law. However, McGlockton's family's Attorney Michele Rayner disagrees.
"I will not sleep," Rayner said during the town hall. "I will not rest until an indictment comes."
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum also attended the town hall meeting to offer his opinion on the controversy.
"Now I don't condone anyone putting their hands on anyone else," Gillum said, "but to make that a death sentence for everyday citizens to then use their own judgment to make that a death sentence is unacceptable. Stand your ground needs to be repealed in this state."
The state attorney will ultimately decide whether to press charges against Drejka.
