It happened just after 1 a.m. on Canal Drive in Brooksville.

Deputies said four adults share the residence and that two of them recently rescued the bullmastiff in Floral City.

The dog began growling at the residents and one of them leaned down in an attempt to kiss the dog on the face, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

The dog bit the woman on the face, specifically her left cheek and lip area.

The dog also bit another resident on the hand before it was finally taken to another room.

Deputies were told that the residents had the dog for "a week or so."

The woman was transferred to a trauma center where her injuries could be assessed by a plastic surgeon.

Hernando County Animal Services took control of the dog.
